How I started…

My painting has been around since school, I struggled my way through Higher art in 1987/88. I scraped a C. I was never going to do much with it, I think I just liked the process of drawing, designing and painting .I found it relaxing. And I did it when I didn’t need to do it, just when I felt like it.
Over the many, many years since school I have only ever painted occasionally. Usually if I was on holiday.  It got less and less over the years though.
But when I started using Instagram I met people who inspired my love of it again. It was seeing people who painted and also who edited images. That’s what I started doing- I called them “cheeky edits ” in my first Instagram account, and then at some point I thought a painting might be a way to do a real life edit.

My first was a painting by an Instagrammer called @haggisthelord I think. I think he might have been a bit weirded out by it. There wasn’t any intention behind it- I was in the art class at work (a rehabilitation charity) and I needed a subject. It was a red roofed house by a road. I have it- and about 90% of everything I’ve painted- still.
So anyway I wanted to give an example of a photo and a painting together. This is from the other week- a photo by @juraman of a derelict cottage fireplace. He finds the coolest places.
My actual idea is that it might be interesting or odd to get the painting into one of those frames, so that the next person who goes in will find a miniature version of what they are already looking at…

When I started painting other people’s photos I felt that they belonged to that other person- their act of photographing the image gave them the right to the painting. As far as I’m aware that just in my head though- no one ever asked for it for that reason, or said they didn’t want it painted, or ask to take it down (I would have if asked- I think all instagrammers can post very personal photos at times- even if on the surface they seem innocuous to other folk).

My current feeling about the paintings is that they are a collaboration- albeit unwitting collaborations  (there have only been a couple of occasions when someone had suggested one to get painted- the one here is an example of that – @writ_in_water suggested her friends photo- and I gave it a try- I very much like this one- but it wouldn’t have been one I’d have chosen really).

Maybe if I was big into selling them I’d have a different feeling about ownership. But I’ve always been happy to give them away. I like that they adorn walls in a few different continents!
